Environment
In recent years, China has made great strides to reduce its negative environmental impact. Nonetheless, we can all contribute in some way to a greener and healthier environment. Xfolder aims to help reduce the carbon footprint of the SAS school community through a more eco-friendly and innovative desk organizer that can be used in libraries, classrooms, and common spaces. We hope that the unique design of Xfolder can provide an additional means through which we, the SAS community, can lower our carbon emissions and become more eco-friendly.


The Xfolder product is made from natural agricultural fibers, making it an inexpensive and durable plastic-free design. The primary material in XFolder is strawboard, which is created from the leftovers generated from farming; it consists of 95% biodegradable agricultural fiber with no formaldehyde. It has also a smooth, rigid, and durable texture and surface and allows for production as thin as 3 to 5 mm.
The environmental benefit of strawboard is twofold. Strawboard, left in nature, will emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The use of this material for a single Xfolder reduces CO2 by 6.4 kg. In order words, XFolder saves 1.7 tons of CO2 for every cubic meter of strawboard. Additionally, we aim to replace cheap plastic folders used by the school for this design.

ABOUT ME

Hi! I’m Gio, the creator of Xfolder.
Xfolder started during distance learning when I saw my workplace was getting increasingly cluttered with worksheets and assignments, which made it difficult to find my materials. I surveyed my friends, and they also shared similar sentiments. Through this experience, I wondered if there could be a better way to sort and organize files while improving upon the cheap, environmentally harmful folders I had used. I came up with Xfolder, an eco-friendly storage system that utilizes a scissor linkage mechanism to allow for ease of use and space efficiency.
This product has allowed me to help my community reduce carbon emissions by over 5 tons by selling the product at cost to students and faculty. Additionally, the Xfolder design was awarded the Shanghai American School Innovator Award 2020-2021 and a utility patent in China.
Being able to create Xfolder to fix the problems I saw in real life has been very empowering, and I plan on growing Xfolder and expanding its positive environmental impact.
